Firyal Al Adhamy: DARWISH – AN ALTAR OF POETRY

DARWISH – AN ALTAR OF POETRY, an exhibition of recent works by artist Firyal Al Adhamy inspired by the poetry of Mahmoud Darwish is on display at Bu Zaboon House of the Shaikh Ebrahim Center, in Muharraq until 10 June 2013.
Showcasing 20 works of meticulously crafted wooden letters on canvas coated with a palette of rich, vibrant acrylic colors. The focal point in some of the artworks is a letter taken from the late poet’s name and the artist presents each composition as a reminder of a verse by this great poet.
According to Al Adhamy, the late poet’s verses take her back to her land of origin evoking feelings of nostalgia, love and belonging connects her to the world, known to her, of love and tears, za’atar (thyme) and pomegranate.
About the artist
Firyal Al Adhamy was born in Baghdad, and graduated from Baghdad University. From a very early age she witnessed the process behind and the products realized through traditional crafting of jewellery and costume, textiles and woodwork. Her work is inspired by the rich cultural history of Iraq and the Arab’s world. In all her art, Al Adhamy highlights the artist’s longing and nostalgia for one’s cherished heritage and the desire to protect it and distance it from the chaotic reality of our times, thereby documenting and preserving it for posterity.
