Artist in residence Michael Arcega focuses on the polyglot culture of Bahrain- investigating code switching, translations, and mistranslations through the production of contemporary art works in the form of Sculpture, Installation, Video, Print and Watercolor.

Code-switching is a linguistic term that describes the switching from one language to another, whether it’s from Arabic to English or from Sculpture to Painting as an example” –Michael Arcega said.

Currently, Michael is an instructor to Al Riwaq Art Space’s Application Form 01 for Developing Artistic Careers.  The program’s students include Ali Hussain, Jaffar Al Oraibi, Mohsin Al Mubarak, Haya Al Khalifa, Nadine Rizk, Tamadher Al Fahal and Mohammed Al Abbar (Leon D).

These seven artists will be responding to Bahraini objects that are ‘translated’ into new artwork. These works will represent a conversation between Bahrainis and a Filipino-American.

Mike Arcega’s residency is generously supported by the American Embassy.
