The Waterline
(former Bahrain Financial Harbour art gallery)
Until 23 May 2013
‘RE’, presents the work of Giuse Maggi, Lorraine Todd, Louise Greenfield and Jody Peck whose choice and use of materials convey their affinity towards concepts of renewal and rebirth, their resulting work expressing their desire to give recognition to that which is so often tossed aside. Whether from a scientific, functional, aesthetic, or reverential standpoint, these artists see the value in that which others would so easily neglect, a crucial matter to consider, particularly at a time when so many tend to live beyond their means and when wastefulness is deeply connected to egocentric materialism. The Gallery aims to encourage local artists, to promote corporate art sponsorship and the development of corporate art collections and to give new collectors the opportunity to purchase original and affordable art. It also aims to start developing workshops and activities for the community. Located at the West Atrium of the Harbor Towers, the Waterline provides a unique platform for exhibiting national and international modern and contemporary art. The Waterline by definition is the line where the hull of a ship meets the surface of the water, in concept or reality. It is also the name of a special marking that indicates the limit to which the ship may be loaded for specific water types and temperatures in order to safely maintain buoyancy, particularly with regard to the hazard of waves that may arise. Commenting on the renaming of the gallery, Dr. Omar Al Mardi, Managing Director of BFH said, The Waterline is elegantly designed and uniquely positioned whereby the transparent glass windows provide panoramic views of the old city of Manama on one side, as well as magnificent sea views on the other; exemplifying Bahrain’s position as a nation that embraces their cultural history and simultaneously welcomes the progress of the future.
