It took 6o days and a team of five people for British artist Richard Wright to finish painting 47,000 black stars on the left and right ceiling of the Night Watch Gallery at the Rijksmuseum.
Upon entering the gallery, the visitor is immediately alienated by the complex pattern of the each of the 9 x 9 meters artwork. The ‘stars’ form a contemporary accent in the 19th century neo-gothic/neo-renaissance gallery based on the architectural principles, decorations and ornaments of Pierre Cuypers, the architect of the Rijksmuseum.
Richard Wright (London, 1960) is the winner of the prestigious Turner Prize. Although Wright is known for his temporary murals, all of Wrights ‘stars’ are hand painted on the surface of the ceiling of the Night Watch gallery and is a permanent fixture.
