Sotheby’s in Its First Outdoor Sculpture Selling Exhibition In Asia
Unveils Seventeen Sculptures By Zadok Ben-David
at The Singapore Botanic Gardens

Seventeen works by the internationally renowned artist Zadok Ben-David will be shown in the exotic setting of Singapore Botanic Gardens from 23 October 2012 to 31 January 2013.

Zadok Ben-David commented:

My inspiration always comes from nature, which I use as a metaphor for human beings and human attitudes. For the show in the Singapore Botanic Gardens I explore a theme which has fascinated me for over twenty years – butterflies. As in my other works, these include human figures within them. They provoke a feeling of freedom and happiness and of using space in a different way.”

The exhibition follows the artist’s recent installations in the Grand Sculpture Salon of the Mysteskyi Arsenal Museum in Kiev, which garnered widespread critical acclaim. His sculptures for Singapore – figures, plants and butterflies – take nature as their inspiration and play with our perceptions of scale and reality, echoing themes from many of Ben- David’s most powerful sculpture series. Twelve of the works have been created specifically for the show and the location of each sculpture has been carefully selected to reflect and enhance the beauty of the Singapore Botanic Gardens. The exhibition, which will be open to the public free of charge, is taking place with the support of the Singapore Tourism Board and the National Parks Board. Sotheby’s would also like to thank Bank Sarasin, the Main Sponsor of the exhibition.

Dr. Nigel Taylor, Director of Singapore Botanic Gardens, said:

We are pleased that Sotheby’s has decided to host an exhibition of outdoor sculptures at the Singapore Botanic Gardens. This is a first for Singapore - and perhaps Southeast Asia also – being the inaugural show of land art in a public place by a single artist. The public will be able to enjoy this unique art exhibition in the day, and even at night, as these artworks will be illuminated. We hope that the exhibition will be the harbinger of other high quality outdoor displays, whether in the Singapore Botanic Gardens or in other National Parks Board’s venues.”

Enid Yip, Bank Sarasin’s Chief Executive Officer, Asia, said:

Supporting our long-term commitment to Singapore and Southeast Asia, Bank Sarasin is delighted to sponsor this exhibition. With its legendary dedication to excellence for
clients, Sotheby’s shares Sarasin’s traditions. The Singapore Botanic Gardens, like Sarasin, pioneered and continues to treasure sustainability. Sarasin’s heritage is reflected in the innovative approach taken by the Tourism Board, supporting an event that furthers Singapore’s reputation as a centre for art and culture in the region.”
