Wolfgang Tillmans (b. 1968) is considered one of the leading photographers of his generation. In his work, Tillmans is continuously investigating the limitations and possibilities of photography. The exhibition at Moderna Museet will be the artist’s first in Sweden. With nearly twenty years of image making behind him, the exhibition introduces his work to a new audience.

n the late 1980s, Tillmans began creating images with a monochrome laser copier, enlarging details until the surface and contrast made for images that were primarily about materiality, questioning the printing process and distribution of images. After studying in the UK, he became known for emblematic images that are now regarded as seminal documents for a young generation in the 1990s, discussing both subcultures and gender. Tillmans practice has since developed in a variety of directions, including still lifes, portraits as well as large scale abstract works. Closer to a painterly tradition, these abstract images reflect on the self-referencing aspect of the medium, portraying not the outside world but themselves as three-dimensional objects. Balancing between intention and coincidence, these images produced in the dark room appear to be drawn with light.

Since 1995, Wolfgang Tillmans has exhibited extensively and has developed an exhibition strategy involving a constant re-negotiation of motifs and scale. Working site specific, Tillmans approaches each exhibition as an installation. The installations challenge not only how we comprehend photography but also, and more importantly, the way we understand images and image making.

The exhibition is produced by Moderna Museet in collaboration with Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Düsseldorf.
