London, UK. The Pierresvives building in Montpellier by Zaha Hadid Architects for the Département of Hérault has won a Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) European Award. ZHA’s Galaxy Soho in Beijing for Soho China was also awarded an International RIBA Award 2013.
The RIBA Award citation said:
Pierresvives is a dramatic and imposing building. The competition-winning scheme was the only entry to combine archives, sports administration and a multi-media library in one monolithic but dynamic building… The building is a tour de force in a barren landscape and a magnet to a part of the community previously cut off from the city centre. It has already been a catalyst for regeneration.”
The RIBA stated Galaxy Soho in Beijing to be
distinctly urban rather than suburban, civic as much as it is commercial… By breaking the building’s mass into four flowing asymmetric domes of varying height, the design gets light into the deep-plan floor-plates. Each structure encloses a glazed atrium around which the internal circulation is arranged. Flowing bands of white aluminium and glass give the development an almost geological solidity and presence.”
