Esther Mahlangu BMW 525i, 1991

The BMW Art Car Project dates back to 1975 when French racing driver and auctioneer Hervé Poulain wanted to invite an artist to create a canvas on a car. Since then, many renowned international artists have created BMW Art Cars. Born in South Africa in 1936, Esther Mahlangu is known for her brightly coloured paintings and murals in the Ndebele tradition. Having achieved international acknowledgement for her work, Mahlangu’s patterns unite the African tradition with the BMW spirit. Esther Mahlangu’s 1991 BMW Art Car will be on view at Contemporary Istanbul between 14- 17 September.
